History of Selvin

Selvin, Indiana, is a quaint unincorporated community nestled in Pigeon Township, Warrick County, with origins that trace back to early 18th-century settlement and development. It took shape at the crossroads of two vital trails—the Yellow Banks Trace leading from Rockport and the Rome Trace originating from Rome—paths traversed by buffalo, Native Americans, and, eventually, settlers. Initially referred to as Polkpatch, a name derived from the nearby Pokeberry Creek, the area saw the construction of a stockade in 1807 due to tensions with Native Americans. Originally named Taylorsville, the town was laid out and platted in 1839 by George Taylor, a pivotal figure in its establishment, who named it in his honor. Taylor, among the area’s first settlers, arrived around 1821 and generously donated land for both a church and the first public school, establishing the groundwork for community life.

The community’s post office, established in 1853, was first known as Polk Patch, reflecting its informal beginnings. However, to avoid duplication with another Taylorsville in Indiana, the postal name was altered, and in 1881, it became officially recognized as Selvin—a name likely inspired by a French word found in a church hymnal. By the late 19th century, Selvin had evolved into a modest rural center, with a peak population of approximately 250. However, the post office closed its doors in 1951. Selvin has a high school all the way up until 1964 when it closed due to consolidation. Today, Selvin boasts a small yet vibrant community. The Selvin General Store, a historic establishment in operation for over a century, was revitalized under new ownership in 2023, preserving local heritage with its rustic allure and southern-style offerings.
